Stanley House Wedding Photographs – Zoe & Chris

Weddings | 19.02.2014

This was a wedding that I had been looking forward to for a long time.  My lovely friend Zoe was marrying Chris at Stanley House Hotel in Lancashire and I was so excited to be taking their wedding photographs for them.  Zoe & I used to work together back in the day when I had a ‘proper’ job (!) and she was my number one fan from minute one of establishing ‘Jonny Draper Photography’!  She passed my details on to everyone she knew, shouted my name from the rooftops and convinced some of her very good friends to book me to shoot their weddings in the early days of my wedding photography career.  For which I will be forever grateful :)

Zoe and Chris, it was amazing to shoot your wedding – It was everything you described it would be and much more.  Stanley House Wedding Photographs are always beautiful, but you guys lit the place up and were a pleasure to work with (talking of pleasures to work with, it was as always lovely to see my great friend Paul Guard do his thing – with his big band too, which is always brilliant to see!)

It was lovely to work with Jodie A Smith makeup artist (she tells me the ‘A’ stands for ‘Awesome’ ;) and Emma and I were delighted when Zoe found her stunning dress at our very own LOVE Bridal Boutique (how amazing does she look?!?!)

This is the story of Zoe & Chris’s amazing Stanley House wedding….

Mitton Hall Wedding Photography – Nicola and Mark

Weddings | 08.10.2012

I’ve been saving this wedding for a little while…I LOVE it – living and breathing proof that you don’t need a gorgeous sunny day for gorgeous wedding photographs :)

I have to admit, I was a little nervous when I looked out the window on the morning of Nic & Mark’s wedding and saw, quite literally, torrential rain.  I know that in an ideal world, every bride and groom would get a lovely, sunny, warm day, but sadly when you live in the North-West of England, that kind of weather doesn’t come around very often… I wouldn’t have blamed Nic & Mark for having a total sense of humour failure about the weather and I think the fact that they actually live in Spain made it even worse and could have potentially left them thinking that they’d wished they’d flown everyone out to see them get wed in far more predictable and sunny weather!

But they were awesome.  They laughed out loud.  They embraced it.  And we even got outside at one point!  I think the very fact that Nic & Mark had booked such a stunning venue in Mitton Hall, reassured them that even if they couldn’t get outside, the had the beautiful interior of the venue to use for their photographs.

I love photographing weddings at Mitton Hall.  The staff are amazing (Dave and Sarah and all your team – thanks for looking after me as always!) the venue is spectacular – you don’t need much more than that!

So, looking like I was about set off on a 2 week adventure on a fishing trawler with all the wet weather clobber I could find, I arrived at Nicola’s parents house in the morning…

Alexis and Adam’s Mitton Hall Wedding – Sneak Preview!

Weddings | 08.08.2011

This wedding has been a long time coming! It actually feels like I’ve known Alexis & Adam for a long, long time now (that’s a good thing by the way!) and their amazing day finally arrived yesterday! I actually can’t remember how long ago it is since I first spoke to Alexis but I remember the first time we met in person was January 2010, so getting on a while back now! Since then we’ve done their pre-wedding shoot (nearly a year ahead of their day because of Adam relocating to the US for work) been out for dinners, I’ve used Alexis as a bridal model (talk about putting pressure on myself!) we’ve met up at wedding events – it’s got to the point where they’re not just clients, but friends. And I’ll miss them when they fly out to the States on Thursday to start their new life together out there…

I always knew this was going to be something very special. Alexis ‘does’ art. (She’s a teacher) They’re very creative as a couple and we’ve never stopped talking about ideas in the build up to their day. Also involved were my great friends at Flower Design, Specialized Cakes, Paul Guard and of course, Dave and all the team at Mitton Hall. So it was always going to be awesome.

I was also lucky enough to have my very good friend and truly amazing photographer, Sam Clayton, shooting with me yesterday which was a real treat. She got some amazing images and will be releasing a little sneak preview on her blog tomorrow…

So, as promised Ali & Adam – here’s a little look at your very special day…starting with the boys in the morning…

alexis_adam_wedding_sneakblog_001

I then popped round to Ali’s Mum & Dad’s to see how they were all getting on…

alexis_adam_wedding_sneakblog_003

alexis_adam_wedding_sneakblog_004

The gorgeous and amazing Eve Broadhurst was Alexis’s hairdresser.  And all the bridesmaids.  And the flower girl.  She had a busy morning!

alexis_adam_wedding_sneakblog_005

Eve also handily works at The White Closet so was on hand to make sure that Alexis was fitted into her beautiful dress perfectly…

The ceremony took place at St Anne’s Church in Singleton…

alexis_adam_wedding_sneakblog_008

alexis_adam_wedding_sneakblog_009

And then over to Mitton Hall to enjoy drinks on the terrace – and an ‘adventure’ for the bridal party (nobody said it would be easy!)

alexis_adam_wedding_sneakblog_010

Wherever Alexis & Adam travel in the world, they have a ‘jumping’ shot.  So we had to do one yesterday.  It’s their thing!  Their ‘signature image’ if you like.  We even managed to get most of the bridal party off the ground!  (“Is it 1, 2, 3 Jump?  Or 1, 2, 3 and jump on 3??!!?!?”)

Paul Guard at Old Trafford – sneak preview!

Events | 15.12.2010

Check out the coolest thing ever – this is TOP swing singer and entertainer, Paul Guard, actually making it snow indoors at the most amazing Christmas Party gig I’ve ever seen! How many singers have you seen that can make that happen?!?! He was performing at Lancashire County Cricket Club’s awesome new facility, The Point, with an unbelievable big band – I’m very excited to hear that Paul is going to be working a lot more with the live band in 2011/12 – especially at weddings. He’s a top performer and all round great guy – very pleased to look in the diary for next year and see that we’ve got a good few weddings together. Always great fun working with Paul! More coming soon…

Flower Design Afternoon Tea at Lytham Hall

Events | 31.03.2010

I had the pleasure of attending another Flower Design Afternoon Tea at Lytham Hall last week and it was great fun as always! Jane was on top form as usual and it was great to catch up with some of my favourite wedding friends as well!

A little bit of technical nonsense for those who are interested – I shot this whole event with just one lens.  A 50mm prime (which is a fixed focal length, so basically means there is no zoom on it)

I decided to do this to make myself work a little bit harder on the day.  Shooting weddings and events I usually use two camera bodies with two different lenses attached at all times.  A 24mm-70mm and a 70mm-200mm.  This is basically to give myself a really good range from quite a wide lens (at 24mm on the Canon 5D body, it almost looks wide angle) right through to the far end of the 70-200mm zoom which brings things up nice and close!

When shooting weddings, exciting and amazing things are happening all the time, so it’s imperative that I can react to situations and nail the shot.  By shooting with two bodies with two different lenses, I’m set up well to ensure that I can quickly change between cameras and have the right equipment in my hands to capture the moment.

Anyway, I digress!  I was talking about shooting in the complete opposite way!  Which sounds a bit strange after what I’ve just said, but there are loads of reasons for doing it.  I won’t bore you with them all, but in a nutshell, it forces me to go back to basics.  All natural light, framing shots with care and consideration and using the old fashioned ‘zoom’ – my legs!

As you can see, that one little lens has produced some lovely, crisp images…

Jane’s demonstrations are always great fun but hugely informative in a ‘behind the scenes’ type of way.  It’s great to see how the very simplest of flowers come together to form such spectacular arrangements!  I’m rubbish at remembering the names of all the different flowers used so do have a look at the Flower Design Blog to see more detail from Jane!

Dreamcatcher Bridal Open evening

Events | 22.01.2010

Just a little glimpse at a couple of images from last nights fantastic evening at the absolutely gorgeous Dreamcatcher Bridal in Kirkham.  It was great to catch up with some of my favourite wedding friends:  Gill and Georgina from Dreamcatcher, Jane and Jason from Flower Design, Katie Cupcake from The Little House of Cupcakes, Swing singer extraordinaire Paul Guard, the lovely Janet Fenton from The Graham Fenton Experience and all the team from 12 Event Management who were very generous with their beautiful canapes!

This is my very good friend, the truly stunning Ella – not a model by the way!  She works at Pure Beauty in Lytham St Annes and gets roped into wearing wedding gowns and doesn’t make it much of a secret that she actually really quite likes doing it!

Flower Design Supper Clubs

Events | 23.11.2009

I spent three nights last week with my wonderful friends from Flower Design at their Christmas themed supper clubs at the gorgeous Number One South Beach boutique hotel in Blackpool.

Flower Design run a series of supper clubs through the winter, themed to match the time of year. On arrival, guests are treated to a champagne reception whilst a live singer adds to the ambience (the truly magnificent Paul Guard appeared on tuesday evening and the wonderfully talented Nicola Howard was singing on wednesday and thursday evening)
Guests are then invited through to the dining room where they are treated to a fantastic four course meal, with an amazing flower demonstration in between each course by the fabulously creative and talented owner of Flower Design and my very good friend, Jane Thompson. This series of supper clubs then culminated in a grand ‘reveal’ of each of the arrangements all together as part of an amazingly presented Christmas table.

The restaurant looked amazing…

Paul Guard – swing singer extraodinaire!

Portraits | 15.09.2009

This is a good friend of mine from the wedding game – Mr Paul Guard, swing singer, entertainer and all round thoroughly nice chap!

Paul has recently recorded a new album of tracks and needed some shots to use on the album artwork and some of his other marketing material, so we headed out to Salford Quays on a balmy summer’s evening (one of very few this year!) and got some great stuff for Paul to use.

Paul wanted a series of images that had a sense of scale and drama to them – unfortunately we couldn’t get up onto the roof of The Hilton in Manchester city centre to shoot the city scene in the background (!) so we improvised and used the Quays industrial architecture to try and achieve this. I think we did ok!
