Masterclass in Wedding Photography – Testimonials :)

Workshop | 15.03.2013

Two lovely things to share in this blog post:

1) My images from the 2 Day Masterclass in Wedding Photography I ran recently (in association with my great friends at Heaton House Farm and LOVE Bridal Boutique)

2) Most importantly – the wonderful testimonials from the amazing photographers who attended :) Which made me feel all warm and fuzzy when I read them. Thank you very much guys, it genuinely means a lot that you all got so much out of the Masterclass :)

Full details and explanation of what was involved across both days can be found by clicking these very words :)

But for now, some lovely words and photographs :)

“The 2 Day Masterclass in Photography was outstanding. I couldn’t have imagined it being any better. It was a penny spent for a pound of value in return. There were so many pieces of advice that I will take with me that will save me 100′s of hours and 1000′s of pounds. For that, I will be eternally grateful” (Martin Cahill Photography)

“I completely appreciate and value how honest and open you were and thank you for sharing how you do things in the way you did. Years of googling would never have given me what just those 2 days gave me, so thank you!” (Ayesha Rahman Photography)

“I loved the off camera flash part of the day – which I will be doing on my next wedding :) On some courses I have attended before, this simple operation was met with loads of equations and formulas which you simplified to a tee. You put things over so the average Joe Bloggs like me can understand and use efficiently” (Gary Skerratt Photography)

“The business day was awesome! Even down to the location and the technology used was brilliant, with Sarah & Emma allowing an awesome insight that just is very rare to be given” (James Jebson Photography)

“When we used the off-camera flash, it got me thinking differently at that stage. I know I was really keen on learning about this before I came along but I have to say it surpassed my expectations completely and you made it seem really easy. Your style was straight-forward, no-nonsense and avoided techy jargon which is when I switch off so well done! I loved all the lighting stuff and it was great that we all got to have a go too” (Ayesha Rahman Photography)

“Wonderful experience. Just what I needed before my first big wedding, I came away excited, inspired and raring to go. Jonny was extremely generous with his knowledge and experience and I don’t think you can overlook the value of meeting like minded photographers and suppliers” (Amanda Balmain Photography)

“A truly well delivered programme. I enjoyed the informal, conversational approach. I enjoyed the size of the group (just right) and the mix of experience and skills that were being shared. I am buzzing since returning and have a head filled with new ideas and approaches that will dramatically influence my approach to building my business this year” (Martin Cahill Photography)

“First class” (James Jebson Photography)

“It was a great venue, Sarah and the staff were fab, really friendly and accommodating and what a great location for shooting too, the opportunities were endless!” (Ayesha Rahman Photography)

“You clearly thought about who else needed to be involved and utilised the contacts and relationships you have built which was evident over the 2 days. Everyone was lovely, from the models, the other guys on the course, Gemma, Sarah, Emma, James and Jen. The details of the dresses and the flowers were excellent. I must say your choice of models were excellent” (Ayesha Rahman Photography)

“I didn’t expect it to be as good as it was! You never really know when you book these things how they are going to turn out and having done a few courses before, I was expecting quite a lot of repetition but actually there wasn’t. Even when you covered similar ground, which there wasn’t a lot of, it was great to get a different perspective.” (Amanda Balmain Photography)

“Beautiful models. Beautiful location. It was great to get the opportunity to capture images of that quality” (Martin Cahill Photography)

“I LOVED the business day. It worked through all the questions that have been buzzing around my head for months. Given that I am starting out in wedding photography, the teams answers and insights have given me the confidence to make key decisions and push on.” (Martin Cahill Photography)

“I would have paid more for this course without a doubt.” (Ayesha Rahman Photography)

“Extremely informative, brilliantly put together, and I feel I have gained so much out of the Masterclass. I came on the course to educate the way I was shooting – and the two days did just that!” (Gary Skerratt Photography)

“Jonny is a top guy giving a top service to the photographers out there.” (James Jebson Photography)

Couldn’t help finish the images with a daft one ;)   From left to right:  Gemma Hallowell MUA, James Taylor, Jen Brook, Emma Draper.

In summary, a brilliant 2 days spent with an amazing bunch of people – can’t wait for the next one!!!

Love Bridal Boutique – Styal Lodge Photographs

Bridal Shoots | 13.03.2013

Time to look back a few months…

Emma and I opened LOVE Bridal Boutique in August last year and what better way to launch our new business than with a photo shoot?!?! And not just any photo shoot….one that had a couple of other photographers involved too!!! I say a ‘couple’ – but my lovely friends from Lawson Photography, Neil Redfern Photography, Sam Clayton Photography, CG Weddings, JAY Photographic, Emma B Photography, Shutterleaf Photography, Hannah Beatrice, HDM Photography, Lucy West Photography, Alex Davies Photography AND Silk Wedding Videos were all along for the shoot too!!!  How awesome is that?!?!?

Our lovely friends at Styal Lodge (one of our absolute favourite venues!) literally threw their doors open for us and let us have the run of their amazing venue – thank you so much again to the wonderful Higham Family for being so supportive and helpful (and offering some seriously great advice in the run up to opening) with the launch of our new venture :)

Another thank you to our wonderful friends Sonara Parker MUA, Amy Darrington Hairdresser and Jane and Jason from Flower Design for supplying us with such beautiful bouquets to use on the shoot :)

Here’s some of my favourite images from the day….:)

The doors of LOVE Bridal have been well and truly open for a few months now and dresses have been FLYING out!  What a start it’s been, thank you so much to all our wonderful friends in the industry for their help, support and advice and here’s to a great year!

If you’re on the hunt for an amazing dress, give Emma a shout at the boutique to make an appointment – just click the link to take you straight to the website – LOVE Bridal Boutique

Currently stocking Terry Fox, The Heritage Collection By Balbier/Wyatt, Intuzuri, Mia Mia by Alan Hannah and Raimon Bundo, we’ll also be announcing a brand new designer exclusively stocked at LOVE Bridal in the next couple of weeks…!!!

Jonny Draper Photography – A Masterclass in Wedding Photography

Masterclass | 07.01.2013

Jonny Draper Photography presents…

A two day Masterclass in photographing weddings & the business of wedding photography

in association with…

Heaton House Farm & Love Bridal Boutique

The Wedding Industry Awards North West Wedding Photographer of the Year, Jonny Draper, is hosting a two day Masterclass and shooting experience at one of the UK’s top wedding venues, Heaton House Farm in Cheshire.

Day one.

Jonny will guide you through a full wedding day, from bridal preparations through until the first dance and you will get the opportunity to photograph a ‘bride and groom’ throughout the course of the day.

You will be entitled to use the images on your blog, website, Facebook and Twitter – this is an amazing opportunity to shoot at one of the UK’s most popular bespoke weddings venues under the direction of one of the country’s most talked about wedding photographers.

The bride and groom for the day have just been confirmed and Jonny is delighted to announce that they are….

‘The Bride’ – Jen Brook:

‘The Groom’ – James Taylor:

Having worked with Jen before, she was the only person Jonny wanted to be involved in the shooting day.  Beautiful, professional, versatile and great fun too, you’ll have a blast photographing Jen!

Jen has recommended James for the shooting day and having chatted to him about what he can bring to the role of ‘the groom’ Jonny is already excited to see the results of the attendees photographs!  Jen and James have worked together before in bridal shoots, so you can be assured that they are hugely comfortable together and this will come across through the intimate portraits you will be able to create with them.

Jonny is also delighted to reveal that top professional make-up artist, Gemma Hallowell, will be responsible for creating different looks for Jen throughout the course of the shooting day, giving everyone a great opportunity to shoot ‘a bride’ in very different situations with a very different look each time!  Matched with a selection of dresses from Love Bridal Boutique, you’ll be able to take away a stunningly diverse set of bridal images.

Day two.

Jonny will spend the first part of the morning demonstrating how he edits his photographs.  Using images that he will have taken on day one alongside you, he will show you how he runs his workflow, ensuring he maintains a time-efficient, yet bespoke process so that each and every wedding is unique.

“The Business” of weddings and wedding photography is the day’s overall theme.

How best to generate & convert enquiries?

How to establish and build relationships with venues, bridal shops, wedding planners and other photographers?

What part can social media contribute to your business?

Sarah Heath, Heaton House Farm’s Marketing and Business Development Coordinator and co-owner, will speak from the venue’s perspective.

What does a venue look for in suppliers when deciding to add people to their recommended list?

What can you do as a wedding photographer to establish and develop relationships with wedding venues?

As well as Sarah, attendees will also hear from Emma Draper, Owner of Cheshire’s most exclusive bridal experience, Love Bridal Boutique.

Often, a bridal boutique is the very first place brides-to-be get in touch with. Emma will explain why it is crucial for wedding photographers to have a great relationship with bridal boutiques and how they can generate regular enquiries through these relationships.

Over the course of the two days, Jonny will be demonstrating how he creates his signature images, where he finds his inspiration for each wedding shoot, how he forms his relationships with his clients and how he continues to grow his business through networking, referrals, social media, word of mouth and through a whole host of other marketing techniques.

There will be time on each day for q&a sessions and Jonny promises that no question will go unanswered.

The two day Masterclass has been designed for wedding photographers who are ready to take their business to the next level.

Whether they’re just starting out in weddings or are keen to push their business further than they have before, Jonny Draper’s infectious enthusiasm, passion and commitment to all things wedding, will leave them chomping at the bit and desperate for their next wedding to come round so they can put into practice everything they have learned!

This is a one off Masterclass in 2013 and places are strictly limited.  This will ensure that each and every person gets individual attention across both days.

The Masterclass will take place on Tuesday 5th and Weds 6th March, 2013 and places are available on a first come, first served basis, so drop Jonny an email for further information and to book your spot on this not to be missed wedding photography experience!

2012 – A year in wedding photographs!

Personal | 02.01.2013

For the past couple of years I’ve done a round up of my favourite photographs from the previous 12 months, from weddings, pre-wedding shoots, other wedding related styled shoots and personal stuff.

I seem to have shot more than ever this year and with so many amazing things happening this year (Opening Love Bridal Boutique with Emma, winning North West Wedding Photographer of the year in The Wedding Industry Awards, working closer than ever with some of the UK’s top venues and wedding suppliers) I’ve decided to dedicate this blog purely to weddings. I didn’t want to water down the amazing wedding experiences I’ve had this year and so I’ll be adding 2 or 3 more ‘A year in…’ blog posts over the coming weeks…so watch this space…!!!

So, I’m sticking rigidly to the formula I’ve always used for these ‘Best of’ blog posts – only ONE image from each wedding I’ve shot in 2012 is allowed.

Which is hard.

Really hard.

I’m lucky enough to work consistently with brides and grooms who are 100% excited about their day. Not just about the photography, but about their venue, their entertainment, their videographer, their ceremony, their florist.

Which makes my life really easy.

I don’t have to convince people that certain things are a good idea – they’ve got their own ideas that they involve me in and we work on ideas and are creative together.

This is an awesome way of working :) And this means that I shoot A LOT of images at every single wedding that I absolutely love. And to cut them down to my very favourite, single image from each wedding is something that breaks my heart! But I do it because it’s fun too!

Some of the choices are really hard but I make these decisions with my head AND my heart.

What I love about them from a technical point of view in some cases, but more often than not, what I love about the moment, the look, the tears, the laughter, the feel of the photograph.

And there they are below.

Some of them were easy, some of them were really hard, for very many different reasons.

Some of them don’t feature the groom, some of them don’t feature the bride – some of them feature neither! (And they’re the REALLY difficult ones to actually finally make a decision on – but it’s just because something grabbed me that represents the overall day)

So one image, from every wedding this year, with a single line to describe why I love that image (and they’re in no particular order!)

Enjoy :)

Stanley House Wedding Photographs – Kim and Mike

Weddings | 08.08.2012

Well, the blog has been neglected a little bit over the last month or so due to the very exciting but hugely time consuming opening of Emma and I’s (mainly Emma’s!) gorgeous new bridal boutique – LOVE Bridal Boutique in Cheshire! This is the first of TEN posts that I’ve lined up to go live over the next week or so and it’s a great one to make a come back with!

Kim and Mike were married at the stunning Stanley House in Lancashire and I was delighted to photograph their big day for them! Here’s a few of my faves…

Congratulations again Kim & Mike!  It was a pleasure to take your wedding photographs at Stanley House!

June catch-up… Recent weddings and shoots :)

Christenings | 25.06.2012

With all manner of exciting things going on at the moment, shooting weddings at home and overseas, being in the middle of opening our very own Bridal Boutique in Cheshire and just generally being up to our eyes in it (!) has meant that my blogging has taken a bit of a hit recently… So today is a brief round up of what I’ve been shooting over the last few weeks and what you can expect to see more of on my blog in the coming days and weeks! I’ve also got features that will be appearing on RocknRollBride, English Wedding, Brides Up North and Whimsical Wonderland Weddings, over the coming weeks so lot’s of new things for you all to see very soon!

So let’s start with a peek at Sarah & Nick’s wedding in Santorini from early June…

Laura and James’s Mitton Hall wedding yesterday – check out that table centre by Flower Design – awesome!

Baby Lola’s Christening from last week…

Lucie & Andrew’s Castlefield pre-wedding shoot from a couple of weeks ago…

Nicola & Mark’s Mitton Hall Wedding from Friday (I was there twice in one weekend!)  Fortunately, even though the weather was shocking (it improved slightly in the afternoon to ‘torrential’!) Nic kept her sense of humour about it and we got some stunning photographs :)

Andy & Seb’s beautiful Styal Lodge Wedding on Saturday – amazing day and great to work with my lovely friends at Styal Lodge and Top Table as always (thanks especially to Poppy and Rene for looking after me!)

Lots more coming soon!

Love Bridal Boutique, Cheshire – A special guest post!

Personal | 08.06.2012

Well, we’ve had a very busy few months and a new exciting business is well underway for Emma and I… We’re in the process of opening a brand new bridal boutique in Bowdon in Cheshire (exciting!) and we thought, whilst the website and blog for the boutique are under construction, that we’d use my blog to tell you a little bit more about it!  So…I’m handing you over to Emma to do just that!

Well what a wonderful whirlwind of a few weeks it’s been since we finally sorted the lease on the property for our fabulously shiny new bridal dress boutique…

It was definitely love at first sight when we first stepped into what we instantly knew would be the home for the new boutique. Four fabulous floors which seemed to have been built especially for us and what we had in our minds – our vision of combining my dress expertise and Jonny’s photography business and building this into something which brides-to-be will love. Not only is the property itself perfect, but the location is ideal too – a brides paradise of spa’s, hairdressers, a lingerie boutique, restaurants, cafes and soon to be a wine bar! What more could a girl want!?

By this point we had also agreed the name and branding for the boutique so everything was finally coming together. We were working with a very good friend and former colleague from our ad agency days, Louise Poole, who never ever fails to disappoint with her wonderful work. And so…. Love Bridal Boutique and our “lovebird” branding was born…

So, next up was to choose which dress and accessory designers we were going to stock and we very quickly had a wishlist that we knew would fit with our brand and our style… I can’t reveal who these are just yet as we have something very special planned to launch the boutique, but let’s just say that each individual designer collection has their very own style and the full collection works together beautifully. We have lots of different shapes and styles to spoil our brides with too and accessories have also been carefully chosen to work well with all our gowns – including some more unusual and refreshing styles mixed with tradition.

To make our final dress and accessory selections, Jonny and I trotted off to London to the biggest buying event on the bridal calendar “The White Gallery” where all the top bridal designers showcase their collections.  We had a fab time meeting with designers and watching catwalk shows and came away extremely happy with our selections… Jonny was in his element and is now loving his new knowledge of all things pretty and girly ;o)

Well, that’s all for now… looking forward to revealing more to you very soon and with an opening date scheduled for start of August we’re going to be very busy bees indeed!
