2011 – A year in photographs…

Family | 05.01.2012

Here it is! My TOP60 of 2011! (I tried to make it TOP40 but I just couldn’t cut it down any further!) Another amazing year at Jonny Draper Photography filled with awesome experience after awesome experience. Another year of meeting some of the loveliest people you could ever possibly wish to meet and another year of working at some of the best venues and with some of the best suppliers in the wedding industry. To all of my brides and grooms and to all of my wonderful wedding friends – thank you for making 2011 an absolute joy. I’m looking forward to more of the same this year!

So without further ado, my favourite images in no particular order. As with my 2010 review, I set myself a couple of simple rules so as to (hopefully!) not bore you to tears reading this blog post and instead let you just look at and enjoy the images. The rules were: Only 60 images (I worked out that I shot over 100,000 images last year so it’s been a bit of a task to cut them down again!) and only a simple line about each one. Here we go…!!!

The gorgeous Poppy at Styal Lodge modelling for our ‘Future of Vintage’ shoot as featured on English Wedding (you can see the whole shoot HERE)  We could have been in Ibiza the weather was that good!  One of my iconic images of 2011 – so much so that it is about to be hung on our lounge wall!

Katie & Colin’s Grange over Sands wedding – I love a happy and full dance floor!

Bev & Phil’s pre-wedding shoot.  Seedy?  Nah….!!!  I love the colours!  (And so did they!)

Bev & Phil’s wedding at The Ashes in Staffordshire.  Taking a few minutes out at their stunning venue…

I’ve heard rumours about photographers not allowing guests to take pictures at weddings they shoot – obviously I don’t roll like that, but even if I did, I’d have struggled to stop Lisa & Eric’s guests at Thornton Manor!!!

Kelly & Mike’s Inn at Whitewell wedding – stunning.  That’s it.

Alexis & Adam’s wedding at Mitton Hall.  Wowsers.  What a gorgeous evening for the the most gorgeous couple.  Ali & Adam REALLY loved everything about their wedding and the photography and were so keen to use their amazing venue to it’s full potential.  As with all the images in this post, I could have used hundreds of images from their wedding, so it was tough cutting it to this one.  But I’m sure you’ll agree it’s a worthy entry!

Another Mitton Hall wedding, this time Jenna & Chris’s big day (that’s not Chris on the left by the way!) – I just loved Jenna & her bridesmaid’s matching Vivienne Westwood shoes!

Ridiculous gin based behaviour at Kate & Ant’s wedding.  Love it!

Chips by the river for Carrie & Rob and their bridal party at their wedding at Oddfellows in Chester – don’t think I need to say anything else!

Chrissie off of Chrissie & Louis at their pre-wedding shoot at Tatton Park – how gorgeous?!?!

My fave shot from Charlotte Balbier‘s Candy Kisses launch party at Great John Street Hotel in Manchester – a stunning collection and an honour to be involved.

Catherine from Catherine & Will arriving at church.  Who cares that it’s raining?  This is a gorgeous shot!

Awwww…Jacqui & Will at Styal Lodge – I love them so much!  They are the nicest couple in the world!!!

Vicki off of Vicki & Stuart having a race with her bridesmaids at Browsholme Hall.  As you do!

One of my all time favourite images.  The gorgeous Ruth at The Ashes in Staffordshire.  It’s just so ethereal and beautiful!

Brooklyn Bridge in New York City.  Just because it’s so iconic.

A rather special moment at Louise & Tom’s wedding in Bristol where the ‘do not climb on the cow’ sign was very much ignored…

The first shoot I did for Black White Denim in Wilmslow, Cheshire.  My favourite model who’s not a model, Ella…

Jess & Mike’s Manchester pre-wedding shoot.  Because it doesn’t get cooler than this…

Charlotte & Teddy’s (and Ellie-Belle Balbier!) Tatton Park engagement shoot.  The loveliest couple on a stunningly beautiful and colourful autumn day…

Another of my all time favourite images taken at Hannah & Jason’s Styal Lodge wedding – I LOVE a moody sky!

Big red wedding bus at Steph & Kris’s Manchester Town Hall wedding!  Love it!

I think it’s the colours that do it for me.  And the expressions on Ali & Adam’s faces!  A BRILLIANT pre-wedding shoot at Fletcher Moss Park in Didsbury…

Because people only smile like this when it’s the best day ever… Polly and Paul’s Albright Hussey Manor wedding…

Rebecca & Andrew taking 5 minutes out on the beach on their way to Lytham Hall.  Because they could.  I love a bride who loves her dress but doesn’t worry about it!

Mrs Angela Doran.  Because Emma & I love you!

One for the boys AND girls.  A sports car (Lotus Exige for anyone who’s a car geek like me!) AND a man in uniform!  What’s not to like?!  Mike from Jess & Mike outside Styal Lodge…

Lisa & Alex’s ‘secret’ West Didsbury wedding!  I love this shot of them enjoying fish and chips in Frankie’s Fish Bar on Burton Road!

Leona.  Beautiful.

Laura & Simon’s Thornton Manor wedding – you can feel the atmosphere in this shot, I just love it…

Louise & Andy’s Mitton Hall wedding – Bags of attitude!

Vicky & Jamie at The Lowry Theatre – how cool is it that we were allowed to shoot in the theatre?!?!

My great friend Howard Wing getting a ‘Love Train’ going at Paula & Andy’s Barton Grange wedding – that was before the speeches had even started!  That’s how good he is!

Little Lola Fox.  Cute as you like!

Hayley & Matthew’s Blackpool pre-wedding shoot.  The wanted the glitter ball to be a feature.  So that’s what we did!  Ace!

Rachael’s portfolio shoot in Manchester.  Because we got her to sit on a wall on the 5th floor of a carpark and she was up for it…

Dawn & Phil’s Sandhole Oak Barn wedding.  We shot some gorgeous images of them after the wedding breakfast and this one of them having a few minutes to themselves is one of my faves.  What a lovely couple they are too…

Catherine & Richard.  It’s all in the look…

Emma & Pete and a couple of their hilarious mates – what’s not to like about this pic?!?!

Jess & Terry’s wedding.  Another wedding where I could have used hundreds of images for this post, but this was my fave (sorry you didn’t feature Tez!  Although you DID like it so you DID go and put a ring on it!!!)

Jordana & Ben at the windmill on the green in Lytham.  Because Jordana still has it as her profile pic on Facebook – I’m glad she loves it as much as I do!

Nicky & Graham at Styal Lodge.  I wanted to give them a different perspective to the now famous ‘platform’ at Styal Lodge – and it worked beautifully!

Louise from Louise & Andy on their pre-wedding shoot at The Inn at Whitewell.  They wanted to do something a bit different.  So they got REALLY dressed up and then we went for a walk in the country!  Cool hey?!

Tiz & Rich – once again, it’s all about the look…

Andrea & Andy’s Inn at Whitewell wedding.  Just to prove that even hotel corridors look awesome in wedding photographs…

Ashley Margolis shoot (Ricky from Hollyoaks)  Ash wanted something a little bit cooler than his usual headshot/agent card images so we spent a morning shooting some properly cool stuff around Castlefield…

Mel & Jivko’s Conwy Castle wedding.  Check that view out!

Katie & Nick’s big finish to their first dance at Albright Hussey Manor!  As choreographed by my good friend Ailsa Baker!

Tanya & Paul’s Bartle Hall wedding – I love them stealing a minute away from it all just before their first dance…

Check out that smile on Nat’s face!  Proof that rain doesn’t dampen spirits on anybody’s wedding day!

Jamie & his groomsmen at Stirk House having a little loosener before the ceremony!

Recently featured on their wedding ‘sneak preview’ on my blog – I love this shot of Ali & Adam kissing under the mistletoe at The West Tower

Another Black White Denim shoot – featuring the very lovely Charlotte.  Simple, elegant and incredibly beautiful…

Weddings are all about interactions and reactions – I love the look on Maria’s face as her and John are applauded into the room at Rookery Hall

Sophie in a stunning gown from The White Closet at The Styal Lodge Open Evening.  Because it was such a fun evening!

Julie & Jamie’s pre-wedding shoot in Liverpool.  A ‘Friends’ moment…!!!

The gorgeous Stacey on The Vintage Wedding Dress Company shoot for The White Closet at Willow Pool in Lymm.  As featured on Love My Dress HERE!

Carly & Ian’s Manchester pre-wedding shoot.  Because they drink alcohol that is on fire.  And they’re particularly gorgeous and lovely!

This seemed a particularly appropriate image to end on!  Lucy & Ian’s friends at their Lyme Park wedding getting stuck into Jagerbombs!  Cheers!

Rebecca and Andrew’s Lytham Hall Wedding – Sneak Peek!

Weddings | 26.07.2011

What a beautiful day on Saturday for the wedding of the very lovely and gorgeous Becky and Andrew at Lytham Hall! The weather was lovely, some might even say, the ‘perfect’ temperature!

It was a pleasure to work with my great friends Rowley’s Catering and Flower Design at Becky and Andrew’s wedding – always great fun working with those guys!

So, as Becky and Andrew are relaxing on honeymoon, here’s a little sneak peek at their amazing day…starting with their ceremony at St Peter’s in Lytham St Annes…

The choir from the college Becky teaches at sang beautifully during the service…

How amazing is Becky’s Kula gown?!?!

After church, Becky and Andrew wanted to go for a stroll on the beach at ‘Granny’s Bay’ in Lytham….awesome!

Lytham Hall…

There were so many amazing details that Becky had worked tirelessly on in the build up to their day.  Every single thing had meaning and so much thought, time and effort had gone into it all – love it!

The table names highlighted the very different cultural attitudes of our lovely bride and groom…!!!

Flower Design had done a stunning job with the west wing at Lytham Hall…

I loved the scrabble pieces for place names!

No expense was spared on the day – there was even a fly past!

Back inside and I fear that perhaps Becky should have glued the scrabble pieces in place…(I couldn’t possibly reveal what words were ‘arranged’ here, but it doesn’t take a genius to guess the kind of words that were creatively thought up…it was just like being on the set of Countdown!)

Best man Andrew’s speech was a belter – with some quite simply stunning ‘archive’ footage of our groom from years gone by – including my personal fave – the balaclava on the dancefloor!

The video couldn’t have finished more perfectly than with this image from Becky & Andrew’s pre-wedding shoot ;)

Fortunately there was no sign of the balaclava during the first dance!

Congratulations Becky and Andrew!

Top 20 of 2011 – So far…

Weddings | 20.07.2011

How about a ‘midseason’ review then? I thought I’d showcase my favourite 20 images shot at weddings so far this year. The rules? Only one image per wedding is allowed and I’m not allowed to waffle on for ages about boring technical things! A simple sentence with each image to explain why it’s my favourite from that particular wedding.

I’ve been very lucky again this year to work alongside some of my favourite wedding friends at so many of these weddings and all these images feature them. Not in shot. In true ‘Jerry Maguire’ style, they are somewhere just out of shot! So a big thank you to my great friends at Styal Lodge, Silk Wedding Videos, Flower Design, One and Only Bridal Couture, The Coolers, Rowley’s Catering, Timeless Bride, Green Earth Flowers, Lytham Hall, Charlotte Balbier, The White Closet, Top Table Events, Emma Draper MUA, Didsbury Life, The Flower Lounge and And the Dish Ran Away with the Spoon to name just a few!

The images are in no particular order – I love them all equally!

So we start with a gorgeous shot of Ruth of off Ruth and Andy who were married at The Ashes in April.  I love it’s ethereal (ness!)  That is all!

Dawn and Phil and the surprise organised by her friends at school – this is Dawn’s class forming a guard of honour with hockey sticks on her arrival at church!  What’s not to love?!

Emma & Pete.  Drinking with a helping hand from their friends.  Need I say more?!?!

Jacqui & Will at Styal Lodge.  A beautiful wedding for a beautiful couple.  They’ve gone back to London now and I miss them.  Sniff….

Sarah (off of Sarah & Martin) and her girls giving it both barrels on the bowling green!  Love it!

A timeless portrait of the quite simply stunning Neelum (Neelum & Shabab) at Haigh Hall.  Gorgeous.

Leona and Will at Sandhole Oak Barn.  This was a hell of a wedding!  I was lucky enough to sit on the bridesmaids table for the wedding breakfast – what an experience!  (Thanks to CB for looking after me and Katy and Katie for frightening me to death!)

Carrie & Rob at Oddfellows in Chester.  Uber cool.

Sian and Dave at The Inn at Whitewell.  I actually saw one of their friends comment on Facebook that this shot summed up their day.  The weather, the happy vibe, the excitement.  So that’s why it’s here!  ‘Cos I agree!

Mel & Jivko‘s Conway Castle wedding.  This shot is all about Jivko’s flick of the veil!

My sister and her husband.  Kate & Ant at our favourite Italian restaurant, The Tarantella in Poynton.  What an amazing day…

Jordana & Ben and their awesome bridal party.  Cool as anything.

Jenna & Chris at Mitton Hall.  Because this is the shot that Jenna and I had talked about for months leading up to their wedding.  And we nailed it exactly as she imagined.  Perfect!

Hannah & Jason on the platform at Styal Lodge.  Taking advantage of the moody sky and proving that it’s not all about bright sunny days!

Catherine (off of Catherine & Will) and her girlies.  Sometimes waiting until a little bit later in the day for certain shots is totally worth it…

Sam & Aaron at Duncombe Park in North Yorkshire.  Because they look amazing in what is a completely amazing venue.

Nicky & Graham at Styal Lodge in Cheshire.  Because I got nettled!

Laura & John at The Villa in Wrea Green, Lancashire.  They had a table for two at their wedding breakfast!  How cool?!

Catherine & Richard and their gorgeous bridal party at Lytham Hall.  Owning the place.

Lisa and Eric at Thornton Manor.  Does this shot need a reason?!?!

Possibly the closest wedding I’ll ever do to my front door!  Lisa & Alex’s ‘Secret’ West Didsbury Wedding.  This shot just sums up everything about the coolest part of South Manchester…

So that’s it so far!  Gorgeous couples, gorgeous venues and all round gorgeousness!  Plenty more to come the rest of the year which I’m sure will be just as fab as the first half of the year has been!

Catherine and Richard’s beautiful Lytham Hall wedding – Sneak Preview!

Weddings | 17.07.2011

There was one thing on everybody’s minds yesterday morning ahead of Catherine and Richard’s wedding – the weather! The forecast had been pretty grim all week, but literally as I arrived at Catherine & Richard’s place in Lytham yesterday, the sun started to shine and things were looking up (I’m by no means claiming responsibility for this…but if I’m honest, it’s not the first time it’s happened…!!!)

I actually started off meeting Richard and the lads in The Taps (Lytham’s finest hostelry) before I went round to see Catherine and the girls, so the sneak preview starts there…

The amazing team at Flower Design had even custom built an arrangement for the gate at Catherine & Richard’s house – love it!

Vera.  Wang.  Dress.  That is all.  Oh, and a pair of Jimmy Choo’s…

Gorgeous blue sky at St Cuthbert’s in Lytham!

Loving the Flower Design lych gate!

Catherine’s gorgeous bridesmaids Rebecca, Alice and Sarah eagerly await her arrival!

Catherine arrived to cheers from a very excited crowd outside church!

On to the fabulous grounds of Lytham Hall…

The Gold Room at Lytham Hall.  Expertly set up by my great friends at Rowley’s Catering and Flower Design…

Catherine & Richard had a signing board featuring their favourite image from their pre-wedding shoot at The Inn at Whitewell

Catherine’s Vera Wang dress really was stunning…

The bridal party.  Owning the place.

Love a moody sky!

Congratulations Catherine & Richard!  It was an amazing day!

Aahhhh…one of my favourite places in the world…The Inn at Whitewell (Emma and I got married there!)

A beautiful start to the day this morning in the brisk countryside air with Catherine & Richard who get married at another gorgeous venue, Lytham Hall, this summer (Love it there! AND, I get to work with my great wedding pals Rowley’s Catering AND Flower Design! AND, the coolest wedding band in the land – The Coolers! It’s going to be awesome!)

Here’s a little sneaky peek at what we shot this morning…

Rebecca and Andrew’s Ormskirk pre-wed shoot – Sneak Preview!

Pre-wedding | 23.02.2011

Great afternoon in the Lancashire countryside today with Becky & Andrew – starting and finishing up in the pub! (there’s worse things to be doing on a Wednesday afternoon!)

Here’s a little sneaky preview just for them! (Can’t wait for their wedding – it’s at one of my favourite venues, the gorgeous Lytham Hall and I’ll be working with some of my favourite wedding peeps – Flower Design AND Rowley’s Catering! Awesome!)

More coming soon!

Dorothy and Paul’s pre-wedding shoot at Dunham Massey

Pre-wedding | 27.07.2010

I posted a sneak preview of Dorothy & Paul’s pre-wedding shoot at Dunham Massey a few weeks ago – I loved that one image so much that I’ve included it again on this post! I’m sooooo excited about Dorothy & Paul’s big day – one of my favourite venues, some of my favourite people and best wedding friends – it’s going to be brilliant!

They’re getting married at the best kept secret in Lytham St Anne’s – the magnificent Lytham Hall (although thanks to all the couples who are getting married there these days, it’s becoming much more well known which I’m really pleased about) The best in the business are all there making it happen from them – Rowley’s Catering looking after all things food, drink and making sure the whole day goes perfectly. Flower Design making the hall look even more spectacular than it does already! And the main man, my very good friend, Howard Wing – the UK’s no 1 wedding singer – it really is going to be a very special day.

So onto the shoot and Dorothy and Paul – I was so delighted to get a phone call from Dorothy once they’d received their images. They were absolutely made up with the shots and it was so nice of Dorothy to take the time to call me and tell me – she didn’t have to do that and I really was so happy to take that call! But that’s the kind of people they are – good fun, kind, caring and thoughtful. Perfect clients!

We arrived at Dunham Massey at 9:30am in the morning and it was a pretty miserable day. Brolly’s at the ready we walked through to the main park where, as soon as we started shooting, the rain stopped! We got a good hour in before it started again and then hit the cafe just as the heavens opened! Perfect timing!

Here’s some of my favourites from the shoot…

Dorothy and Paul’s pre-wedding shoot at Dunham Massey

Pre-wedding | 16.07.2010

The rest of the images will be here next week, but for now, here’s one that I loved as soon as I shot it!  Dorothy & Paul are getting married in a few weeks and having their reception at one of my favourite venues, the spectacular Lytham Hall.

I really can’t wait to shoot Dorothy & Paul’s wedding, they’re so lovely and so photogenic it’s not true!  They’re going to look amazing on their special day.

But not only do I get to shoot two gorgeous people in a gorgeous venue, I get to work with some of my most favourite and gorgeous wedding friends too!  The amazing Rowley’s Catering, the incredible Jane & Jason from Flower Design and the horribly tall & good looking Howard Wing (congratulations to Howard & Sam on the birth of their son, William this week!  All the best guys!)

This is going to be a truly fantastic wedding!

More images from Dorothy & Paul’s pre-wedding shoot at Dunham Massey coming soon…

Charlotte and John’s pre wedding shoot at Lytham Hall

Pre-wedding | 22.06.2010

We were up against it last weekend, let me tell you! Paul Rowley from my favourite caterers and events managers, Rowley’s Catering, had already done me a big favour and let us use Lytham Hall for Charlotte & John’s pre-wedding shoot, but as soon as we set off up the drive, the heaven’s opened! And showed no sign of letting up…

A bit of luck, in that Paul had some show rounds to do at the hall at the same time we were there, along with a very kind offer from Paul to let us inside to shoot some stuff in the very magnificent hall itself, meant that we got a great variety of images for Charlotte & John and also proved (as I like to do as often as possible to offer reassurance to brides and grooms who are concerned about the weather) that it doesn’t matter what the weather does, we’ll still get great images outside (there’s always shelter to be found!) and if we have to do everything inside, then no problems at all – we’ll get great stuff there too!

Charlotte & John are getting married about 200 yards from Charlotte’s Mum & Dad’s house and then having their reception at another of my favourite Lytham venues, The Grand. Can’t wait!

So…a few of my favourites from Charlotte & John’s shoot…

I LOVE the inside of Lytham Hall – it’s spectacular, there’s loads of variety and different locations to use…

I love these two shots – as Paul said on the day, Charlotte & John look like Lord & Lady Clifton on them!

Tee hee….

I can’t wait for Charlotte & John’s big day now, they’re so lovely, so easy to get on with and are so excited about everything to do with their wedding!

Steph and James’s wedding at Lytham Hall and The Grand Hotel

Weddings | 11.05.2010

So here it is! The full post all about Steph & James’s amazing wedding at Lytham Hall and The Grand Hotel in Lytham St Annes.

I was lucky enough to be working on the day with some of my absolute best wedding friends, including the fantastic Flower Design and the guys from Rowley’s Catering over at Lytham Hall.  When you work closely with other top wedding professionals on a regular basis you really do feel reassured that nothing can go wrong on the day.  You all know each other well, you know how everybody works and you can watch out for each other and help each other out throughout the course of the day as well – it’s a great feeling and you know that everybody around you desperately wants the bride and groom to have the best day ever and will do anything to make sure that happens.

So back to the wedding!  I started off in the morning at The Grand where everyone was staying (I was nervous Steph & James would be bumping into each other but they were in rooms at complete opposite ends of the hotel!) and met the girls in Steph’s room…

Jason and Sarah from the amazing Flower Design arrived to present Steph with her bouquet…

I met the lads in the bar (surprise, surprise!)

Back upstairs where Steph was being helped by her gorgeous bridesmaids, Sarah and Anna and her very gorgeous Mum, Jean…

Steph’s Dad John arrived once Steph was ready…

Sarah & Anna were the picture of discretion when trying to spy on the boys from the bedroom window without being seen!

Arriving at Lytham Hall…

The ceremony really was fantastic, so full of emotion…

Champagne time!

Lytham Hall is one of my favourite venues to shoot weddings at.  Everywhere looks beautiful, the interiors are amazing and the grounds are endless…

A true spring wedding…

Back to The Grand in Lytham for the wedding breakfast – how amazing are Flower Design’s creations?!

I put this image on the sneak preview a few weeks ago, but it’s so beautiful I had to show it again!

The speeches were truly brilliant….!!!

And before it was time for me to leave, the first dance…beautiful….

So a final congratulations to Steph & James and both their families who made me feel so welcome on the day – it was a genuine pleasure being a part of your special day!
